Sustainability leadership in the food industry

Oscar Mayer is a leading manufacturer of chilled ready meals and prepared foods, supplying supermarkets and major brands across the UK.  

Oscar Mayer contacted Rawstone when they already had a mature approach to ESG management and data. With new leadership and a renewed focus on innovation, the company wanted a progressive strategy that would differentiate them from their peers. Rawstone worked with Oscar Mayer over several months to conduct a materiality assessment, measure their scope 3 GHG emissions, review their ESG policies and develop an ESG strategy. Key highlights from the project include:

• In-depth analysis of GHG emissions information and development of a practical plan to enable Oscar Mayer to become the first in their industry to produce a chilled meal with zero production-related emissions (i.e. those relating to ingredient storage, cooking and delivery to customer).

• Development of an industry unique method (meal ESG evaluation framework and internal data processes) to enable Oscar Mayer to proactively influence their customers’ selection of more environmentally and socially friendly product specifications and to track improvements.

• Summarisation of all proposed business ESG ambitions and targets in a simple way to allow for ready communication and importantly, to integrate seamlessly with a larger project being undertaken in the business – their innovative Gastro Hub.

Since completing the strategy Rawstone has continued to work with Oscar Mayer, supporting them with the establishment of their ESG Committee, waste compliance regulations and SECR reporting.
